FAMILY TIME

Tranquility 4JR HandleyHey Space Cadets, how’re ya’ll doing on this fine day?  I’m doing great, working hard on edits for a short story and book four!  I’m excited to see how the story ends before moving on to the next project. During this time, when I don’t have deadlines beating me about the head and shoulders, I took some family time.  Took my bride on the date to Red Lobster, killed my diet and one meal, and generally have been having a blast! Okay, I know that some people might suggest that it’s a little low rent, but chain restaurants are budget friendly. Maybe if the next book sells like hotcakes, I’ll try a “real” seafood place.  I’m told that I’m a bad representation of the Tidewater Region of Virginia because I’ve never had lobster.  Eventually, I will fix this, but only after we keep the power on! WARRIOR WEEKEND: Sandra J. Yearman

Hello, Space Cadets! Today, I wanted to introduce you to another author from my WARRIOR WEEKEND INTERVIEW SERIES.  I am knee deep in rewrites on book four of my Sleeping Legion series.  I really hate all that red ink.  Other than that all is moving along well in my life.  They figured out most of what was up with my wife – now they just have to figure out the treatment.  The only other thing on the agenda is to take my son out tomorrow to see the eclipse – since I have nothing else to add lets talk about today’s featured veteran.  We are talking to author Sandra J. Yearman.

Sandra YearmanSandra J Yearman is a native of Wisconsin, where she currently resides. She graduated from the University of Wisconsin with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism. Sandra was a member of the United States Army Reserves for over twenty years. She retired from the Dane County Sheriff’s Office in Madison Wisconsin as a sergeant.
Sandra is a cancer survivor. And it is on this journey that she says she found her voice and began to write. She established Seraphim Publishing LLC in 2008. Sandra has spent decades supporting and working with rescued domestic animals.

Book Four Updates

JR HandleyHey Space Cadets, how’re ya doing on this fine August day?  I just wanted to give you a quick update on where we are with book four.  Right now Boss Man and I are still batting around ideas for a title for the book, since Maternal Vengeance wasn’t the best fit.  I can promise you that as soon as we know, you will!  We do know that the cover won’t change since we want a continuous look across all of them.  I think that the editing and rewriting for this book will take longer than the others, but it’ll be a good learning experience for me. I have to worry about tying up all the plot threads that I strung along, and linking the series back into the final Continue reading “Book Four Updates”

Book Review: Powered (Mech Wars Book 1)

Hey Space Cadets, here is the next installment in my series of book reviews. As I’ve mentioned earlier, I’m a member of the TRMN. It’s a fan club for the Honor Harrington Universe by David Weber, and they do contests for their members all the time. There is a reading contest going on recently, and we get bonus points for reading authors who are on the TRMN Author List. And, if those authors will be at the 2017 Honor Con, we get even more points! So, you’ll see my next several reviews on books by Chris Kennedy, Marko Kloos and David Weber before I get back to Richard Fox’s Ember Wars Continue reading “Book Review: Powered (Mech Wars Book 1)”

I AM BACK!!!

Hey Space Cadets, I hope you’re doing well!  I just wanted to give everyone a quick update on Team Handley, before I get back to the grind.  And I know – I said I would be out offline for a week; however, in my defense, my admin person took a vacation.  Now, onto other news – I’ve just finished a short story I’ve titled LZ New Birth, and set in a world that’s been flitting around inside my head for a few years.  It’s in the universe I intend to write in once I finish co-writing The Odera Chronicles with Corey, my soon-to-be co-writer.  It was already submitted, so now we wait!  Once I know more, I’ll let you know what’s happening with this story.  I’m currently going over the first round of edits for the last book in the Sleeping Legion Series and working on a novella for another anthology.  Afterward, it’s full speed ahead with Odera! The Odera Chronicles

JR Handley Blog HeaderHey Space Cadets, how is everyone on this fine day?  I’m doing well, and wanted to bring you my news!  My former editor, Corey D Truax, and I have signed our next series with a small publishing house, Theogony Publishing.  This umbrella publishing house is a part of the larger and more dynamic Chris Kennedy Publishing.  Corey and I scoped him out together, in a totally non-stalker kind of way, and liked how he operated. He’s professional, and another veteran of America’s Armed Forces. I think Corey liked that he was a sailor too, but I forgive them both for their imperfections

So, what to say about The Odera Chronicles without giving too much away?  This story tells the tale of Alexis Monroe, one of the first female infantrymen in the US Army. Alexis was an only child, her dad was a Seabee and veteran of the wars in Mesopotamia. After her mother died, it was just the two of them, so she became the son he wanted. Alexis strove to please him and honed her inner tomboy. Shortly after she graduated college, females were being allowed to join the combat arms of the military. Alexis enlisted into the infantry.  Alexis did well at training, very well. When those scores were combined with her college degree, she was quickly advanced to the rank of sergeant. Despite how well she did, her fellow grunts always assumed she was promoted because she was female. When she graduated from training at the NCO Academy, she was given an out of the way assignment. Out of sight, out of mind, or so the Army thought. Her job was simple; guard a warehouse, don’t look inside.  Of course, she looked – and a grand adventure ensued.  To find out more, you will have to read the book.

As you all know, I will keep you up to date with our plans for the series, but for now, less really is more!  I really enjoyed working with Corey as he edited The Sleeping Legion series, so I think this collaboration will be a blast. I really hope that the fun we have translates onto the page. We both really want our readers to enjoy this little tale of galactic woe. So, if you’ve enjoyed the shenanigans over here in the Handley Trenches, then re-enlist on the insanity train!

Until next time, stay frosty and don’t forget to keep your powder dry!

Transitioning Projects

Hey Space Cadets, how’re y’all doing today?  I’m doing great, working on a few small projects and prepping to start my next series. While I wait for the editor to take his Red Pen of Doom to my final Sleeping Legion novel, I’ve started outlining several smaller projects and tying up loose ends. I’ve got two short stories for different anthologies to write and then I’ll start on my next series.  I really like the premise of the series in question, and think it has a lot of potential but more on that in another blog!
